Cairns Zumba class on Guinness Book radar
Cairns has become the unofficial Guinness world record-holder for the largest Zumba class, after a successful Active Living - FREE fun fitness event at Fogarty Park on Tuesday evening.
Despite a rainy lead-up, a total of 3105 people completed the 30-minute class, led by instructor Brooke Marshall.
"It was such an amazing thing to be a part of - to look out there and see thousands of people following my lead was a bit surreal," Ms Marshall said.
"I'm so proud of the people of Cairns who got behind this idea and made it happen."
Mayor Val Schier, who was among the Zumba participants, said the event showed off all that was great about Cairns.
"This is just the image we want to people to see when they look at Cairns - locals and visitors embracing the active, outdoor lifesyle and the tropical climate," Cr Schier said.
"People were in good spirits, having fun and showing that when the people of Cairns put their minds to something, they can achieve it."
The official paperwork, footage and photographs will be submitted to Guinness World Records for formal recognition and confirmation of the record, which is expected to take about a month.
In the meantime you can see participant and media photos and videos on the Active Living - Fun Free Fitness at the Esplanade Facebook page.
