Awards Celebrate Local Gardeners

11 Sep 2011

Green thumbs gathered at the Botanic Gardens today for the presentation of the 2011 Cairns Regional Council Streetscape Awards.

Mayor Val Schier announced the winning gardeners at the new Visitors Centre, which provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate the region’s tropical beauty.

“We live in one of the most beautiful places in Australia and today we are recognising the residents who put in the time and effort to make their created gardens just as beautiful as our natural landscape,” Cr Schier said.

“With such an abundance of stunning tropical plants available to use, it’s so easy to create our own piece of paradise in our front yards.”

Judges took into account plant selection, energy and water efficiency and the appearance from the street among the garden criteria.

“Even though we live in the wettest region in Australia, it is important to conserve our water and promote water efficiency in the garden,” Cr Schier said.

Among the winners was Edmonton resident Lynn Hale, whose tropical and floral gardens have been eight years in the making.

“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, since I was about 10 years old,” Mr Hale said. “I’ve created gardens everywhere I’ve lived.”
