Multicultural programs continue with LAMP funds
Cairns Regional Council has welcomed a continuation of funding under the Local Area Multicultural Partnerships program.
The program partially funds the employment of a Multicultural Planning Officer and the provision of ongoing projects such as the Multicultural Advisory Group.
Council CEO Lyn Russell said CRC was lucky to be one of 13 councils in Queensland to be included in the LAMP program.
“The program is aimed at assisting councils with culturally diverse communities,” Mr Russell said.
“By employing a Multicultural Planning Officer, Council is better equipped to meet the needs of our community.
“We welcome news that the State Government funding has been guaranteed for a further three years.”
Mayor Val Schier said the Cairns region was home to people from more than 60 backgrounds and this was represented in policy-making.
“The Multicultural Advisory Group provides input on all major projects and brings recommendations to Council that help improve interaction and communication between Council and cultural communities,” Cr Schier said.
“Also through the LAMP funding, we have established refugee welcoming workshops, which provide important health and safety advice, an International Day of Peace program and multi-lingual guides to assist with cyclone preparation.
“Last year, we were lucky enough to have the A-Bomb: Hiroshima and Nagasaki exhibition come to Cairns and leave with messages of peace that have since been displayed in Hiroshima. This is another direct outcome of the LAMP program.”
