LGMA Qld Excellence Awards 2011 - Award for Excellence in Innovation
At the LGMA Queensland Excellence Awards for 2011, Cairns Regional Council was the winner of the Award for Excellence in Innovation for the CBD South Flood Mitigation, Lake Street Stormwater Pump Station project.
The project included installation of a pump station capable of shifting 4800 litres of water per second.
Construction of the $9 million project started in April 2009 and was completed less than 12 months later.
There has been no flooding in the targeted area since its completion, despite a particularly heavy wet season this year.
Cairns Regional Council's Cairns Local Disaster Coordination Centre was also a finalist for this award.
