During 2009, Cairns Regional Council won three merits in the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Awards. 


Disaster Management and mitigation

Climate change Adaptation Action Plan

The action plan provides a comprehensive assessment of climate change risks and opportunities confronting Cairns Regional Council. The action plan takes an holistic approach to considering the implications of climate change planning for the various operational areas within Council.


Planning Achievements in Small and Local Communities

Master Planning for the Port Douglas Waterfront

The project demonstrates thorough application of planning principles to an iconic waterfront location . The outcomes respond to the needs of the community including logical processes, alternative scenarios, rigorous analysis, inclusive community consultation and clear implementation plan.

This was a sound example of master planning processes for a small yet complex location.


Planning Practice and Administration

Character Precinct Code and Multiple Dwelling (Small scale development) Code

Cairns Regional Council in preparing these complementary codes has sought to resolve the conflict between overlays and balance completing planning outcomes to accommodate increased densities while protecting local character and heritage. The code development process included an open consultation program with the community and industry.

Council has been recognised for its commitment to the ongoing refinement of planning controls to provide clear policy, improved planning practise and ultimately deliver good planning outcomes.
